2 أ. فوزيه الغامديComparative We use the comparative when we compare two things or people. A) we add er to the short adjective to form a comparative: Ex. 1 – Reem is taller than Layla. 2 – Mona is prettier than her sister. B) we write the word more before to long adjective to form a comparative: Ex. 1 – Atheer is more beautiful than Reem. 2 – The red car is more expensive than the black one.  Remember that comparatives are often followed by than.

3 أ. فوزيه الغامدي as …as or so …as We use as …as to show that something is the same or equal. As…as… John is as tall as Bob. Your house is as large as mine. Not so/as.. as.. Used to show that something isnot the same or equal. This book is not so interesting as that one. The tree is not as tall as the building over there.

A) We add est to the short adjective to form a superlative: Ex. 1 – August is the hottest month in the year. 2 – Reem is the prettiest girl in the class. B) We write the word most before long adjective to form a superlative: Ex. 1 – Atheer is the most beautiful in the class. 2 – The small car is the most expensive one.  Remember that before superlatives we often put the.

We add -est: light / lightest, neat / neatest, fast / fastest, tall / tallest Short word, ending in e. We add -r: wide / wider, fine / finer, cute / cuter Short word, ending in e. We add -st: wide / widest, fine / finest, cute / cutest Short word, with one vowel and one consonant at the end. We double the consonant, and add -er: hot / hotter, big / bigger, fat / fatter, sad / sadder Short word, with one vowel and one consonant at the end. We double the consonant, and add –est : hot / hottest, big / biggest, fat / fattest, sad / saddest Long word, ending in Y. We change y to i, then add -er: happy / happier, silly / sillier, lonely / lonelier Long word, ending in Y. 6 أ. فوزيه الغامدي There are some adjectives that are irregular: Ex, good - better - best bad - worse - the worst far - farther - farthest A few words can not have comparative or superlative because they are already absolute : Ex, unique - perfect
