 Haroun is going to get his dad’s subscription to the story water renewed  Chooses Butt the Hoopoe as his flying object to get him there  After landing tries Wish water but it doesn’t work (can only think for 11 minutes and wishes need lots of work to come true…)  Tries to drink a story to feel better – It’s polluted!!!  They rush off to Gup City to meet the Walrus and find out the problem!

 Haroun and Iff get to Kahani (Story moon)  They don’t know the Chups (stereotypes) (p. 79)  Meet Mali, the Floating Gardner, who straightens our story streams (like a hairdresser (p. 82)  Meet Goopy and Bagha, Pentimaw fish, who eat and create new stories (p. 84)  (p. 86) Old Zone is most polluted, location of all old stories, and origin of all stories  (p.88) Gup army are Pages, Leader of them Gen. Kitab (Book)  (p.89) Meet King Chattergy, Prince Bolo, and learn of Princess Batcheat’s kidnapping and the warning  See The Walrus…  Find out Rashid is on moon and thought a spy…

 Rashid tells about his journey He arrives via Rapture – in dreams can go and ‘wake up’ in dream wherever you want  He woke in twilight strip describes Chup, worship Bezeban (no tongue), and saw Princess Batcheat kidnapped The young people like to go to the Twilight strip for mystery, strangeness, romance and get away from constant light of Gup  Plan of attack “For Beatcheat and the Ocean”  Haroun tired, Blabbermouth takes him on long walk to room where she tells him about Gup, the royalty, and life as Page (they don’t know she is a girl)  Haroun sleeps and wakes to hear they are going to war

 Find proof (quotes) and explain the importance of the following in the chapters. You do not need full quotes, just the page# and beginning and end. You may work with a partner, but both of you need to have the quotes and an explanation of the importance! Chapter 4 – The concept of stories and imagination  Page 63 – Concept of imagination. What does Rushdie want us to believe?  Page 72 – The concept of stories. What is Rushdie saying about stories and story telling? Chapter 5 – Discuss the concept of the ‘Old Zone’. Relate this literal place to our figurative view of stories (p. 86) Chapter 6 – How is Princess Batcheat described? How does this relate to the meaning of her name in the back of the book? Why does it make sense that Prince Bolo (based on the meaning of Bolo) would love her (p. 97)?

 Army of ‘pages’ organized  Journey to twilight strip – Idea of freedom of speech and its power discussed!  Land on shores of Chup  Introduced to Shadow Warrior – note the relationship between silence and beauty and idea that Gup and Chup maybe could get along if they didn’t hate each other! (think literal groups and figurative meaning – silence and talking!!)  Don’t forget the message of this book – the idea of freedom of speech, importance of storytelling, and the balance of stories, lies, speech, and silence. We will talk about this idea MUCH more on Friday!
