Heat Transfer – The Big Ideas Heat energy passes from a hot object to a cooler one. Heat travels better through materials that are conductors. Materials that are insulators prevent heat from being conducted. Thermal radiation occurs when objects emit heat energy as a wave. Heat energy can be transported by convection.
Heat Transfer – Prior Knowledge Students understand that some objects are warmer than others. They can use the Fun- damental, Sound, Heat, and Light, to review heat. It will also be helpful if students have:Sound, Heat, and Light felt the differences in temperatures between room temperature water, hot or warmer water, and ice water. used a thermometer to measure the air temperature.
Heat Transfer – Common Misconceptions Heat is a substance. –Reality: Heat is not a substance. It is a form of energy. Temperature is a property of a particular material or object. (Metal is naturally cooler than plastic). –Reality: Temperature, which is a measurement of heat, is measured on a continuum scale and can vary in time and location even for the same object. For example, a piece of metal might be cold while in a dark, cool room, but become hot when placed in direct sunlight.

Heat Transfer – Instructional Ideas Have students demonstrate simple heat transfers. –Students can use their own body heat to melt ice and then to cool hot chocolate. They can also measure the amount of time it takes and record the temperature changes if they work with a partner.
Heat Transfer – Instructional Ideas Experiment with different types of cans, i.e. different colors or different metals, to determine which absorbs more solar energy on a hot day. –Students should record the air temperature first. –Then, students should monitor and record the temperature inside each can over a period of time. –This can also be done in the classroom with heat lamps.
