DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Weather and Climate Weather About Weather

About Weather – The Big Ideas Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. Weather includes temperature, air pressure, humidity, wind speed, and precipitation. Changes in air pressure are associated with changes in weather. Air movement is caused by the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun. The movement of air is wind as the air moves from one area to another.

About Weather – Prior Knowledge Students have probably learned about weather in their early elementary years. They are probably familiar with basic types of precipitation, temperature, and some basic sky conditions. It would help students to view the FUNdamental to review the basics about weather and how its reported. It would also help if students: –Have viewed weather reports in newspapers or television. –Have experienced a variety of weather conditions.

About Weather – Common Misconceptions Thunder and lightning occur when clouds bump into one another. –Reality: Thunder and lightning are the visible and auditory effects of a massive charge transfer between clouds. It rains when water evaporates, gets cold, freezes, or falls out of a cloud. –Reality: Rain begins to fall when drops of water in a cloud are too heavy to remain airborne. Clouds foretell rain. –Reality: Clouds are necessary but not sufficient predictors of rain. The presence of clouds does not mean it will rain.

About Weather – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Weather. Virtual Lab: Wow, Windmills! Video: Climate Zones Reading Passage: Measure the Weather E Book: The World Record Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

About Weather – Instructional Ideas Before showing the video clip on climate zones, give students a graphic organizer with the different climates. They can complete this as they listen and watch the video. After students read the E Book called The World Record, allow students to research and record different weather records using the Internet.

State Standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding Weather, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES. http://discoveryeducation.com/forward/curriculum.cfm You can click on any standard to see what resources are available to teach it. Additional Information: For additional content, check the Extend section within the concept.
