DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Changing Matter Changes to Matter Mixtures

Mixtures – The Big Ideas Physical changes do not change the type of matter. Mixtures are combinations of two materials that retain the physical qualities of both. Mixtures can be separated into their original materials by physical means. Solids mixed with a liquid that do not dissolve can be separated by filtering.

Mixtures – Prior Knowledge Concepts regarding mixtures are new to students. It will be helpful for students to review physical changes with the Fun-damental, Things that Change. It is also helpful if students have:Things that Change mixed rocks, mud, and water and then separated them with a sieve. mixed noodles and water and then separated them with a strainer.

Mixtures – Common Misconceptions Mixtures are the same as compounds. –Reality: A compound consists of two or more different elements in definite proportions that cannot be separated by physical means while a mixture consists of two or more substances that are not chemically combined with each other and are capable of being separated. All mixtures are solutions. – Reality: Not all mixtures are solutions. A solution is a mixture which consists of particles of one or more substances (the solute) that are distributed uniformly throughout another substance (the solvent).

Mixtures – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Mixtures. Exploration: MixturesMixtures Reading Passage: Plenty of Water, but None to DrinkPlenty of Water, but None to Drink Video: Physical ChangesPhysical Changes Video: What is a Mixture? What is a Mixture? Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Mixtures – Instructional Ideas Provide students with several mixtures such as sand and small magnets, sand and water, or a pile of different objects such as blocks. –Ask students to separate the mixture. –Have the students record in their science journal how they were able to separate the different types of mixtures including what types of tools they needed.

Mixtures – Instructional Ideas Ask students to create a new mixture recipe (i.e. salad, fruit salad, trail mix, etc.) –Each recipe must include the amount of each ingredient, how to properly mix the ingredients, and how the mixture can be separated.

State standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding Mixtures, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES. http://discoveryeducation.com/forward/curriculum.cfm You can click on any standard to see what resources are available to teach it. Additional Information: For additional content, check the Extend section within the concept.
