DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Matter Properties of Matter Size and Shape

Size and Shape – The Big Ideas Solid materials can be compared and classified by size and shape. Rulers and other tools help us measure and compare the sizes of solids. Size and shape of liquids are measured by putting the liquid in a measuring container. A liquid assumes the shape of the container it is in. Gases, such as air, fill the space in which they are placed.

Size and Shape – Prior Knowledge Students have been interacting with matter since birth. It will help for students to use the Fun- damental, What’s the Matter, to review size and shape of matter. It will be helpful if students have classified things by:What’s the Matter –relative size –colors –shapes –odors –containers

Size and Shape – Common Misconceptions Gases are everywhere and cannot be contained. –Reality: Gas takes the shape of the space or container in which they are placed. The size of a liquid changes when it is placed into a differently shaped container. – Reality: Size, or more accurately called the volume of a liquid, remains the same even though the shape of the container might be different.

Size and Shape – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Size and Shape. Exploration: Size and ShapeSize and Shape Reading Passage: Some Interesting Ways to Measure MatterSome Interesting Ways to Measure Matter Video: Measuring LiquidsMeasuring Liquids Video: Using Our Five Senses to Determine Properties of MatterUsing Our Five Senses to Determine Properties of Matter Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Size and Shape – Instructional Ideas Perform a demonstration of pouring a liquid into several different measurement containers such as a flask, short beaker, and graduated cylinder. –Ask different students to observe the volume on each container and record it on the board. Have each student write a demo memo in their student science notebooks of what they have just observed and learned. Watch the video Measuring Liquids.Measuring Liquids –Have each student check their demo memo for accuracy.

Size and Shape – Instructional Ideas Pass a ruler to each pair of students. –Ask the students to measure different solids in the classroom and record their measurements in a data table. Give the students a long piece of string and a marker to measure unusually shaped solids, such as a globe. –Once they mark the string, they can use their ruler to determine the circumference of the globe.

State standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding size and shape, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES. http://discoveryeducation.com/forward/curriculum.cfm You can click on any standard to see what resources are available to teach it. Additional Information: For additional content, check the Extend section within the concept.
