COMPOUND SENTENCES by: Brittany and Kailyn

WHAT IS A COMPOUND SENTENCE?  A compound sentence is two independent clauses that are held together with a comma, and linked by a coordinating conjunction.(or you could only use a semi- colon[;])  Each complete thought of the compound sentence can stand alone by itself.

WHAT IS A CORDINATING CONJUNCTION? A coordinating conjunction is a part of speech that serves to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences together. Coordinating conjunctions include for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. Also known as FANBOYS. In a compound sentence, coordinating conjunctions are the part of speech that links the two independent clauses together. An example would be: The little boy wanted pancakes for his dinner, but his mom told him that pancakes are not for dinner. But would be the coordinating conjunction because it is connecting the two independent clauses together.

WHAT ARE INDEPENDENT CLAUSES?  An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence, containing a subject and a predicate.  Examples would be: -I have never seen yellow pigs before! -They are very stylish.  To make this a compound sentence, you would add a conjunction.  The new sentence could be: -I have never seen yellow pigs before, but they are very stylish.

EXAMPLES OF COMPOUND SENTENCES Some examples:  I am suppose to work out everyday for two hours, but I would rather eat chocolate cake all day. (Each red part is known as an independent clause. When you connect the two clauses together with a conjunction, it makes a compound sentence.)  All of my friends were bored, so my mom decided to take us bowling. (For this sentence, it is connecting the two independent clauses together. The independent clauses are: All my friends were bored and My mom decided to take us bowling.) The trick to figuring out if the sentence is compound, you have cover up the FANBOYS or semi colon in the sentence and see if the two sentences on each side make sense. If they do, it's a compound sentence.

MORE EXAMPLES  The cat walked to school, and she had a boring day.  I thought today was Thursday, but everyone has been saying that it is Friday!  I love dancing in the rain when its raining, or I like to go see a movie.  Football is a sport that a ton of people like to watch, but do you think people enjoy watching baseball more than football?  Jessica loves to cook; however, she also likes to bake.  Doctors are concerned about the risk of people getting skin cancer; they are educating people about wearing sunscreen.

WHY ARE COMPOUND SENTENCES IMPORTANT?  Compound sentences are important because they help explain things more fully and can give more flow to writing.  If we only had simple sentences, it wouldn't be able to have very much details.  Compound sentences are definitely more easier to make as they involve the use of simple phrases and conjunctions!

REVIEW!!!  A compound sentence are two independent clause that are combined together by using an appropriate conjunction or a punctuation. -The boy and his best friend went to dinner, and they saw a turkey on the side of the road.  A conjunction is a word that connects two independent clauses together. -I love to eat chocolate chip cookies, but I also love to eat gooey brownies.  An independent clause is a simple sentence containing a subject and a predicate. -I came home from soccer at 4am in the morning.
