Freshmen English Listening & Speaking Unit 5 – Who pays? Kuei-Min Huang, PhD

Ask a Partner When do boys and girls start dating – going out with each other? On the first date, how many people usually go together? Who usually asks for a date? Where is a good place for a 1st date?

Listen to David’s story David had a date last night. He isn’t very happy about it. He is telling Stan about it.

Check your Understanding 1. Why was Joan upset with David? 2. Why does David want Joan to pay half of the bill on a date? 3. Does Stan agree with David’s idea of the man and the woman splitting the bill? 4. Does David want to go out with Joan again?

Listen again And try to find the answers for each statement by underlining them.

vocabulary Terrific: very good, wonderful Expensive: things cost a lot of $ Fair: being equal Equal: = as in = 2, the same Split: to share, to break up something into small parts Offer: to ask if others need something, to give

What do you think? When a woman asks a man for a date, she should pay. When a man asks a woman for a date, he should pay. Men should always pay. That’s what men do. It’s tradition.
