Why is science at BHS unique? It is not one path for success in science Students can flow in and out of leveled courses each year As soon as their Life and Physical graduation requirements are met there is more freedom in choice We offer the only district Biomedical STEM program We offer a great variety of course selections

TUSD Graduation Requirements 3 years of science in the Tustin Unified – One must be a life (biology, etc.), physical (chemistry, physics, earth science, etc.), and then an other (any science offering)

CSU/UC Requirements Two years (three years recommended) of laboratory science (D course) in two of these three foundational subjects: biology, chemistry and physics. So how do I know if my student is ready for honors science as a freshman? Please listen to the recommendation of their 8 th grade science teacher If they feel overwhelmed please consider changing in the first two weeks of school Should be very strong test takers, independent learners, and critical thinkers, strong readers and writers Large skill difference between middle and high school honors science (remember they last took life science in 7 th grade)

PLTW STEM Courses Principles of Biomedical Science – body, health, and medicine Human Body Systems – anatomy Introduction to Engineering – falls under math and new for BHS next year

Who should take a STEM Class? Must have an interest in the field or else they will not enjoy the classes Lessons are self directed, with minimal initial instruction from the teacher. Answers are not directly given, instead we require students to form conclusions based on observations, similar to how doctors form a diagnosis based on symptoms Career journals with every unit expose students to possible careers. Students are presented with a few careers relating to the unit and they research the education required, the typical responsibilities, and the pay.

STEM Labs Students follow written procedures to complete hands-on labs Labs include taking cardiovascular health tests like EKG’s, using microscopes to compare cell types, building models of molecules, completing online activities, creating presentations, making models of the anatomy, diagnosing a case study patient, gel electrophoresis and other biotechnology techniques, etc.
