Supporting Writing at Home

What you can do to support your child at home… Good writing starts with lots of talk! Use the handwriting guidance when children are practising writing their spellings. Look carefully at how your child forms their letters starting and ending at the correct place. Ensure children know what the spelling pattern is every week and look for that in your books and their writing at home. If you have time, you might write the weekly spellings in a sentence, drawing attention to the spelling rule. Have a go at writing different sentence types: Statement, Command and Question.

National Curriculum Standards Expanding noun phrases…can we make them better? For e.g. ‘The teacher’ … The strict maths teacher with curly hair. In your packs you will also have a list of common exception words, your child must be able to spell and write these by the end of Year Two. By the end of Year Two your children will need to be able to use the words from your grammar glossary in your handout when talking about and evaluating their own their writing.

GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION Correct punctuation to demarcate sentences: capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and commas. A woman, without her man, is nothing. A woman: without her, man is nothing.

PAST OR PRESENT? Past tense He was painting the door. They were sleeping. Present tense Caroline is looking for the latest brochure. Dan and Billy are fishing off the pier.

ASSESSMENT All change! Levels are no longer in place. We are working with Year group national expectations. All children will be at a different place within this national expectation at different parts of the year – this reflects how unique your child is. All children in Year Two will be working towards achieving a secure understanding of Year Two curriculum content by the end of the year. We will report this to you as working towards, meeting or exceeding expectation.

How can you select high quality ‘real books? Ask your local librarian for recommendations Look at past winners of the Kate Greenaway Medal, given for outstanding Children’s Literature every year: Look at the topics that you child will focus on in each term and look for books about that topic.
