1 Year 2 Assessments 2018 19th October 2017

2 Overview The children are tested on spelling, grammar, punctuation, reading, arithmetic and mathematical reasoning. However, their final end of year assessment is linked to teacher assessment against the age expectations as outlined in the National Curriculum. We ensure that the children will have regular opportunities to practice test questions to help them prepare.

3 Tests Papers Spelling paper Grammar and Punctuation Arithmetic
Reasoning and problem solving Reading comprehension (2 papers)

4 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Spellings linked to the words the children bring home each week to learn. Grammar (word level) – nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Use of suffixes i.e. -ed, -ness, -ly, -less, -er. Grammar (sentence level) – extending sentences using ‘when’, ‘if’ ‘that’ ‘because’ ‘or’ ‘but’. Expanded noun phrases for description i.e. ‘the blue butterfly’ Identifying statements, questions, exclamations or commands. Be consistent when using past and present tense.

5 Punctuation Use of capital letters, full stops, question marks to punctuate sentences. Apostrophes to mark where the letters are missing in spelling and to mark possession of nouns i.e. the girl’s name. Commas to separate items in a list.

6 Reading To be at the expected standard:
Read accurately most words of two or more syllables. Read word containing common suffixes. Read most common exception words. Sound out most unfamiliar words accurately, without hesitation. Read a familiar book accurately and fluently. Can check the text makes sense to them. Answer questions and make some inferences on the basis of what is being said and done. Make predictions.

7 Maths 2 papers. Paper 1 – Arithmetic covering calculation methods from all operations. Paper 2 – problem solving and reasoning testing their mathematical fluency. Questions are varied including multiple choice, matching true/false, completing charts and tables or drawing a shape. Some will require the children to show their working out.

8 Maths To be at the expected standard: Partition 2 digit numbers
Add 2 two digit numbers within 100 Use estimation to check answers Subtract mentally a 2 digit number from another 2 digit number Recall and use x and ÷ facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables ¼ 1/3 ½ ¾ Use different coins to make the same amount Read scales Read the time to the nearest 5 minutes Describe properties of 2D and 3D shapes

9 After the assessments The pupils will be assessed and moderated within school and also with other schools Parents/Carers will be informed of the final teacher assessment in the end of year reports. Writing is solely on Teacher Assessment but their must be evidence of the children applying all the skills required to be at the expected standard. The scores the children get on their assessment papers convert into a scaled score. Teacher assessment statements: Working towards the Expected Standard Working at the Expected Standard Working at Greater Depth within the Expected Standard
