6.5 Question 1 ?#1 Why did Byzantine emperor Leo lll forbid the use of icons in 730? How did the pope react to Leo’s order? Leo III thought people were wrongly worshiping the images there for banned them. The pope claimed supreme religious ruler over the Christians and excommunicated the emperor. Then the Empire Lifted it’s ban On icons.

Question 2 #2 What event in 800 increased tensions between the East and West? Pope Gregory didn’t view empress Irene a ruler because she was a girl. The pope needed the protection of a strong leader to help defend the church in the west. Then the pope decided to crown Charlemagne as holy roman emperor. This outraged the Byzantines who believed they were the rightful rulers.

It was also easy to defend because it was surrounded by water. What were some of Constantinople's main features? One was a huge wall that went around the whole area. It also had the first sewer system. People often boasted that they had a sewer system.

What was daily life like in constantinople? It was better than other towns because they had a sewer system that helped keep the city clean. Also it had a very good defense against enemies. Lastly the king gave bread so if you were homeless you would get bread to eat.
