How does geography affect the spread of ideas?

2 Who is Who? Roman Catholic Church- Latin speaking Christians in the western part of the empire. Led by the Pope. Eastern Orthodox Church- Byzantine (Constantinople) Rejected the Pope as having authority over them. Still claimed a link to the Apostles.

3 What issues divided the western and eastern Christian church?
Icons- Paintings of Jesus or other Christian holy people. Some Byzantines did not approve of the use of icons believing they were a form of idol worship forbidden by God. Byzantine Emperor Leo III in 726 A.D. ordered that all icons be removed from churches. Government officials that carried out his orders were called iconoclasts. Today iconoclasts refers to someone who criticizes traditional beliefs or practices.

4 Church Authority Western Roman Church the pope claimed to be head of all Christian churches. Byzantines (Eastern Orthodox Church) rejected this idea.

With your group answer the following questions on your paper in complete sentences. 1. What was the role of Charlemagne in the churches split? 2. Are icons idol forms of worship, why or why not? 3. How did Christianity finally reach Britain? 4. Why were monasteries built in isolated locations?
