What fairy tales do you know? Snow White Cinderella Sleeping Beauty Rapunzel Hansel and Gretel Little Red Riding Hood Rumpelstiltskin Goldilocks and the Three Bears The Frog Prince

Define your idea of what a fairy tale is. Fairy tale: A fairy tale is a type of short story that typically features European folkloric fantasy characters, such as dwarves, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, mermaids, trolls, or witches, and usually magic or enchantments

Your understanding of Fairy tales may not be as you thought… Originally, fairy tales were gruesome, graphic and vile stories about horrible murders and torture. This is only a mild descriptions. The Brothers Grimm wrote many of the fairy tales that we know today, however, they were not all sunshine and fairies and love like we have been brought up believing. The fairy tales we know today are adaptations of the original stories. If they were the original stories, they would most certainly not be allowed to be read to children.

Snow White, for example, has been changed and adapted over the years into picture books, stories and films. Using the images, explain how the different versions of Snow White have been presented. What visual features communicate this perception.

Task: Fairy Tale Adaptations Objective: To assess and analyse the ways in which fairy tales have been adapted over time We will be looking at three different versions of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. http://pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/story158.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7afEtdYegCk The story as we were told as children http://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/snowwhite/story.htm A film comparison

Tasks Explain how the three films have changed and adapted the original story of Snow White to appeal to a modern audience. Explain the differences between the two written stories. Why do you think the story has been changed?

Homework Task 1: Read the story ‘Cinderella Homework Task 1: Read the story ‘Cinderella.’ What do both of these characters and storied have in common? Homework Task 2: Watch one of the following: Shrek or Hoodwinked. How have the characters been adapted and changed? In what ways have they changed? Homework Task 3: Define ‘intertextuality’ and find examples of texts that have used this technique.

Perception of females Having now looked at some examples of how fairy tales being adapted over time, compare and contrast how females have been presented across the texts. How can you adapt these modern presentations into your own story.

Features of a Fairy Tale Now that you have studied various fairy tales, what do think the common features are? Fairy Tale Features Starts in a beautiful and peaceful land (castle, village, everyone is happy) Story is commonly bases on a physically and emotionally beautiful young female Often a source of evil stemming from jealousy or vengeance, Source of evil is usually a woman, A love interest (usually a prince), Something terrible happens to the heroine caused by the source of evil, usually tones of magic and witchcraft, good always triumphs over evil, told in the third person, ‘Once Upon a Time….’ beginning

Planning your Fairy Tale Plan your fairy tale. Think about the features of a Fairy Tale, perhaps you can twist one of these features? For example, you could have the princess saving the prince, you could tell the story from the point of view of the evil character- the possibilities are endless! You can create your own fairy tale or you can adapt an existing one. Have fun!
