2 Today’s Goal: Learn the distinctive features of fairy tales as you read and analyze “Rapunzel.”
Outcomes: Define and describe what is meant by “fairy tale.” List 10 common elements (or features) of most fairy tales. Define “symbol” and identify one way that a symbol is used in Rapunzel. Explain what is meant by “character types.”

3 Starter #1: When people are retelling a story in which something wonderful happens, they sometimes say, “It was like a modern fairy tale!” How do fairy tales often end? “And they lived happily ever after.” Before we get to that happy ending, however, a lot of terrible things usually happen. How many of you have ever had a fairy tale read to you? How many of you have ever read a fairy tale on your own? How many of you would recognize you were hearing a fairy tale, even if you hadn’t read it before? How can you recognize a fairy tale? How many of you could name the 10 common elements of most fairy tales?
