MICE Radiation Shielding MICE Phone Conference, 28 January 2004 Yury Ivanyushenkov Engineering Department, RAL

MICE Phone Conference, 28 January 2004 cellar 1 m services zone Concrete radiation shielding Steel magnetic shielding stay clear zone Scale: Main gate * Exit * High level exit * 5.6 m door cold box 3.8 m * All doors are normally blocked when MICE is running MICE Radiation Shielding Option: All the hall is a MICE restricted area

MICE Phone Conference, 28 January 2004 MICE Radiation Shielding:Status 1.Option “no block house” was considered and agreed at the last Collaboration meeting. 2.This concept was approved by Paul Wright, the ISIS Radiation Safety Officer, at the meeting on the 12 th of January at RAL. Paul Wright’s comments: - doors: ideally should be lead sliding doors; - local shielding for doors to protect against radiation scattered by walls and the ceiling; - beam-line shielding requires careful consideration. More detailed recommendations on both the MICE hall shielding and the beam-line shielding have been promised. 3.New MICE layout is under way. The latest version by Tony Jones is shown on the next slide.

MICE Phone Conference, 28 January 2004 MICE Layout

MICE Phone Conference, 28 January 2004 MICE Radiation Shielding:Next Steps Get recommendations from ISIS Safety Officer and implement them into MICE layout. Complete preliminary design for magnetic shielding and implement it into MICE layout. Complete preliminary layouts for other systems including cryogenic plant, hydrogen system and RF power supply system. See next slide for an example of preliminary cryogenic system layout.
