MICE alignment precision Is expected to be similar to the one on ISIS i.e.: - along the beam 0.5 mm - transverse the beam 0.1 mm - angular tilt << 0.5° ISIS surveying team uses a laser tracker for alignment of beam line (and equipment) components.

ISIS Laser Tracker Measures in 3D the position of an optical target with precision of 1 μm over 30 m distance.

10 mm reamed hole (MICE has to provide such the holes on the modules) Optical targets for laser tracker target holder optical target

ISIS optical targets for magnets

Typical ISIS rail systems ISIS surveyor Mike Krendler suggests MICE should use rail system for precise position of MICE modules in the beam. In this approach an accurate position of rails defines the position of a module. Rails alignment can be done either with a real module or with a dummy module/structure. Once the rails are aligned, module always be in the same position.

MICE alignment procedure: Proposal 1.Alignment of linear rail system in horizontal plane and perpendicular to MICE beam-line axis. 2. Install the module onto the mounting platform in the off-line position. 3.Align the centre of the module in vertical and horizontal planes. 4.Secure the module to the mounting platform. 5.Move the module on the rail system to the beam-line axis position. 6.Lock the mounting platform at this position. 7.Repeat the procedure for other modules. 8.Check the axis of the string of modules.
