Your Growth and Development Chapter 2

Growth Patterns Measured by height. weight, and age. Four areas: Physical Intellectual Social Emotional Each person has his or her own rate of growth, but there is a sequence of stages. Heredity and environment can also influence your overall growth

Physical Development Best to see in your teen years. Affects your height, weight and internal systems Continues fro birth to adulthood( this can vary from person to person) Growth spurt: Girls are 17 usually when they reach full development Boys are older at around 21. Sex Characteristics: Puberty- girls these days can start very young, should really be before 17. Voice changes, menstrual cycles. Reaching physical maturity Get yearly checkups, take good care of yourself, exercise and eat right. Think abstractly, develop logic, judgmental and start to visualize the future.

Social Development The way you relate to others Socialization and Roles: You learn to act how your society acts and accepts. To fulfill responsibilities, learn beliefs and standards and norms and your role, etc. Character Used to judge every personal situation Moral principles- what is right and wrong? What are some of our society? Character traits (fig 2-10) To show all the above traits means you are strong in character Development of character/strength Teaching, training and experiences throughout life develop your character. Who are some people that influence this? When you identify a weak area, develop a plan will improve it Reaching social maturity Set of qualities that make you an enjoyable person to be around You should be able to be counted on, depended on, and trusted

Emotional Development Is the ability to experience and express emotions. Happy, sad, angry, afraid, excited, and worried. Teens have strong emotions that can change rapidly. Think of yourself, how are you throughout the day with your emotions? Sometimes one thing may upset you today, but not tomorrow. Practice sharing your feelings with others and realizing when you are being irrational and rational. Can override your ability to think logically. Having supportive people around you, reducing stress, and avoid substances that can change this (ex, drugs and alcohol) and learning new skills can help you be emotionally mature.

Your Personality What would your best friend say about you? This is what makes you a unique person How does your view of yourself effect your behavior? Physical traits, skills and talents and responses from others all effect your personality. Self-concept (fig 2-15)-mental picture of yourself. How you see yourself Self-esteem-how you feel about yourself High- you respect yourself and feel secure

Your Temperament’s Influence Inborn pattern of responses. Pattern related to basic behavior How you express yourself intellectually How active you are physically How you feel and express emotions How social you are Extrovert: outgoing, enjoys being with people, positive Introvert: withdrawn, shy and anxious Two common types of behavior and temperaments are known as: type 1 and type 2 Look at figure 2-17.

The influence of Human Needs Needs for food, clothing and shelter surpasses all other needs. Need to feel safe and secure. Need to feel love and accepted The need for recognition and respect. MOST people strive to be the best they can be and they continue to learn and grow.

A Healthy Personality You know you are not perfect and there is always things you can work on. You are happy with who you are. Continues to learn and grow from expereinces.
