Presentation transcript:

DO NOW….  What are 3 good places to study?  Why would the bedroom not be a good place to study?  What is a distraction?  Give an example of an interruption.

Managing your environment Productive Study Environments

What is the best study environment?  A fixed place to study and do nothing else but study.  As clutter-free as possible. Clean up any piles of papers on the desk and tidy up first.  Quiet and free from distractions. This includes music, TV, phones, and talking.  Free from interruptions.  What is the difference between a distraction and an interruption? (a distraction diverts your attention from what you are doing-i.e., ‘the tv is distracting me from studying); an interruption happens suddenly and you must abruptly stop what you are doing i.e.-my younger brother walked into my room and interrupted me)

Best study environment…  Comfortable temperature  Comfortable chair  Desk  Good lighting

Your Current Study Environment  1. Write down 3 places that you study regularly.  2. Next to each place you have written down, rate the amount of clutter on a scale of 1 to 5  (1=No Clutter, 2=Minimal, 3=Some, 4=A lot 5=Completely Cluttered)  3. Now, Rate each study location on the amount of noise.  (1=Very quiet, 2=Mostly Quiet, 3=Some Noise, 4=A lot of Noise 5=Extremely noisy)  4.Next-Rate each study location for distractions and interruptions.  (1=No distractions, 2=Few Distractions, 3=Some, 4=Frequent, 5=Constant)

Current Study Environment Continued..  5. Do any of your study locations have a desk? (Write yes or no for each location)  Ex. Location 1:Yes, Location 2: No, Location 3: Sometimes  Now-look at your ratings from each question.  What is the best study location for you based on what we just talked about?

What exactly is a productive study environment??  Quiet with NO distractions  Has a desk  Library, office, isolated room

What are the WORST places to study?  BEDROOM  Places with distractions, lots of people, etc.  (Living room-it is the common room in the house)  (Park, Mall-distractions)

Now that we have a study space figured out…How do we organize our space?  Post your class schedule  Get numbers of other students in class for help  Make it comfortable  Make study rules for yourself (put your phone away during study time-reward yourself by getting it back later)  Be consistent!

Items you should keep on or near your desk…  Tape  Scissors  Markers  Pens  Pencils  Paperclips  Notebook Paper

Prepare a Study and Homework Schedule  Getting organized:  Use the student handbook/agenda  Use wall calendar  Time Management…(In our project we outlined time and when our free time should be scheduled for studying)  Don’t waste time…JUST DO IT! (Say no to procrastination)  Don’t be afraid to adjust the schedule to work for you!
