THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

Purpose of the Skeletal System Provides structure, support, and protection for the body Involved in movement Bones make new blood cells and store minerals

Skeletal system’s important parts Bones –An adult has 206 bones!

Skeletal system’s important parts #1 = Cranium

Skeletal system’s important parts #2 = Rib Cage

Skeletal system’s important parts #3 = Vertebrae

Skeletal system’s important parts #4 = Pelvis

Joints A joint is where two or more bones meet

Hinge joint (knee)

Ball and Socket joint (shoulder)

Connective Tissues (tissues that connect different things together)

Cartilage –strong and flexible tissue that provides cushioning at joints

Ligaments –Strong cords that connect bones at a joint

Problems with Skeletal System Fractures – broken bone

Problems with Skeletal System Dislocation – bone comes out of joint

Problems with Skeletal System Sprain – stretching of ligaments

Problems with Skeletal System Osteoporosis – Disease that makes bones weak, caused by lack of calcium, Vitamin D, and exercise

Keeping the system healthy THINK before taking a risk Wear seat belt Wear protective gear Get enough calcium (milk)
