2 The skeleton has five major functions: Shape and support Movement
Protection of internal organs Production of blood cells Storage of vitamins and minerals

4 The backbone or vertebral column is the center of the skeleton.

5 The backbone is made up of 26 small bones called vertebrae.

6 Parts of the Bone Compact Bone Spongy Bone Bone Marrow Outer Membrane (Periosteum)

7 The spaces in bone contain a soft connective tissue called marrow
The spaces in bone contain a soft connective tissue called marrow. The job of the bone marrow is to make blood cells.

8 Cartilage is a connective tissue that is more flexible than bone.

9 A joint is a place in the body where two bones come together.

10 Immovable joints connect bones in a way that allow little or no movement.

11 Moveable joints allow the body to make a wide range of movement.

12 There are 4 types of moveable joints:
Ball-and-socket Hinge Gliding Pivot

13 The bones in movable joints are held together by a strong connective tissue called ligaments.

14 31. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the body’s bones become weak and break easily.
