1 Your Skeletal System

2 Health Inventory I sit, stand, and walk with straight posture.
a.) always b.) sometimes c.) never I participate in regular physical activity. I avoid using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. I wear a safety helmet when riding my bike. How did you do?????

3 Write…… Take 2 minutes to answer the following ?.
Describe a sport or activity you enjoy. Tell what role you think your skeletal system plays in this activity.

4 READ……. Read Define Pages 404 & 405 Skeletal system
Another term for your skeletal system could be: Your body’s framework (like a building)

5 Production of Blood Cells
Take Notes…….. There are 5 main functions of the skeletal system. Support Protection Body Movement Production of Blood Cells Mineral Storage

6 Functions of the Skeletal System
1. Support The skeleton forms the base to which muscles and other soft tissues attach. Example: Backbone helps you to stand 2. Protection The skeleton provides protection for the soft, delicate parts of your body. Examples: Cranium-brain Ribs-lungs and organs Spine-central nervous system

7 Functions of the Skeletal System
Movement In order to move, muscles need to pull on bones. Muscles contract, and the bones they are attached to act as levers and cause different body parts to move. The movement takes place at the connection between bones which is called a joint. Produce blood cells Produced in the bone marrow. (the hollow center of the bone). Red blood cells carry oxygen to all body parts White blood cells fight off germs and disease.

8 Functions of the Skeletal System
Stores minerals These minerals give bone its hardness and weight. Calcium is the mineral that is important to bone growth and development. Where do we find calcium? Milk Cheese Yogurt dark green vegetables Fortified foods

9 Diagram….. How many bones do we have? 206
How many do you need to know?????? Page 405

10 1.Cranium 2. Mandible 13. Clavicle 3. Scapula 14. Sternum 4. Ribs
15. Humerus 5. Spine 16. Radius 17. Ulna 6. Carpals 18. Pelvis 7. Metacarpals 8. Phalanges This page allows for a variety of individual learning strategies. It takes the whole skeleton and breaks it down into individual parts so that the learner has choices in the order that they want to learn the information. Again, this allows for individual rates of learning to occur. This page also asks the students for an overt response in the form of a kinesthetic movement because as they click on the name if each bone they are to physically point it out on their body. This strategy is used to keep the learner active in more ways than one. 19. Femur 9. Patella 20. Tibia 21. Fibula 10. Tarsals 11. Metatarsals 12. Phalanges

11 Read…… Page 406 in your book Define and give an example for:
Hinge joints Gliding joints Pivot joints Ball and socket joints

12 JOINTS Hinge (elbow & knee) Gliding (wrists & ankles) Pivot (neck)
Ball & socket (hip & shoulder)

13 Define….. Cartilage is strong flexible, gel-like tissue that cushions joints Tendons are tough band of tissue that attach muscle to bone (Achilles tendon) Ligaments are cordlike tissues that connect bones to bone at joints (ACL)

14 Read…… Page 407 & 408 in your book

15 Problems with the skeletal system
A break in the bone is called a fracture. Dislocation a bone is pushed out of the joint When a ligament is stretched or twisted and causes swelling it is called a sprain. Overuse happens over time (shin splints, tendonitis) Scoliosis is a disorder which the spine curves to one side of the body. A condition characterized by brittle and porous bones is called osteoporosis.

16 Ways to keep your skeletal system healthy….
Eat dairy products containing calcium and vitamin D Get regular physical activity-weight bearing exercises (walking, jogging) Use good posture Use protective gear for sports Heal completely after an injury
