The purpose for this Unit Plan is to help students determine whether the volume or surface area of a three dimensional shape is more, using various strategies when being challenged with real world problems and mathematical problems.

Lesson 1 Calculating the Area for two dimensional shapes Lesson 2 Calculate the Volume for three dimensional shapes Lesson 3 Calculating the Surface Area for three dimensional shapes

 Aim: To be able to calculate the for two dimensional shapes base on their previous knowledge of length and width.  Objectives:  1. Make notes after watching the video on calculating area.  2.. Calculate the area for 2- dimrnsional shapes.

 3.. List at least six two dimensional shapes in the classroom and compute their area.  4. Access the interactive web site with their partner and complete the assigned activities on area. Aim:To be able to calculate the volume of three dimensional shapes with reference to real world situations and mathematical problems.  Objectives:  1. Recognize and identify the main parts of the three dimensional shapes.  2. Estimate the volume for the three dimensional shapes as they place various materials into the shapes with their partner.  3. Home Work Students will measure the volume of a room in their home and determine how much paint will be needed to paint it and report their findings to the class. along with a model of the room. Record, justify and share their findings with the whole class using appropriate mathematical language and strategies that demonstrate thinking and understanding of the mathematics.

Aim: For students to be able to apply their previous knowledge of calculating area to compute the surface area for the three dimensional shapes especially when the nets for the three dimensional shapes are given.  Objectives:  Recognize and label the length, height and width for the three dimensional shapes.  2. Access the Internet and interact with the web site and make appropriate note for future references.  3. Calculate the surface area for a rectangular prism, triangular prism and a cylinder when the nets for the shapes are given.

Homework: Students will find the surface area of a room in their home and determine how much paint will be needed to paint it, along with the actual cost for the paint if I liter of paint will cost $260.00, per liter. Students will create a presentation to share and exhibit their process of demonstrating the surface area and volume of the classroom and indicating which measure is more. The presentation will include digital pictures of the model as it is being developed, formulas, and calculations. Additionally, students will research paint prices and include information about the paint they would use to paint the classroom, as well as anticipate the price for the overall project.
