1 Lesson 4 Volume of Prisms
Unit 4B Measure Figures Lesson 4 Volume of Prisms

2 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Objective: Swbat find the volume of a prism. Do Now: Quick Check Worksheet

3 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Definitions Volume – is the measure of space it occupies. Polyhedron – 3 dimensional figure with faces that are polygons. Prism - solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases that are polygons. *** They are named by the shape of their base.

4 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Faces are the flat surfaces in the shapes of polygons. Edges are line segments that join two vertices. Vertex is a point where two or more straight lines meet. *** Cones, cylinders and spheres are not polyhedrons b/c they have curved sides and are not polygons. They have no faces, vertices and edges.

5 Rectangular Prism Triangular Prism

6 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Volume is measured in cubic units. Volume of Prisms Volume = Bh (General Formula) Base x height Area of the base Height of the figure

7 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Volume of a Rectangular Prism Base is a rectangle: Area = LW Volume = Base x Height Volume = L x W x H H W L

8 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Example #1: Example #2: A box of chocolate has a length of 12 cm, a width of 2 cm and a height of 1 cm, what is the volume of the box? 3 in 2 in. 15 in.

9 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Volume of a Triangular Prism Base is a triangle: Area = ½ base x height Volume = Base x Height h H b Volume = (½ base x height) x H

10 Lesson 4: Volume of Prisms
Example #1: Example #2:

11 Classwork Guided Practice: #1 – 4 Independent Practice: # 1 – 3 Problem Solving Practice: # 1 - 6

12 Closure Question: How do you find the volume of a prism? Exit Ticket Homework: Practice: # 1 - 9

13 Exit Ticket Find the volume of a rectangular prism with a length of 10 cm, width of 4 cm and height of 2 cm.
