Defining Success Many Faces of Measurement

In this lesson we will: M.7.G.6 – Solve real – world and mathematical problems involving area, volume, and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms

Area, surface area, and volume are frequently used in everyday life. When purchasing new carpet for your bedroom, the salesman will ask for the area of the room to determine how much carpet you will need. If you decide to paint a building, you will need to know the surface area of the building in order to buy the correct amount of paint. You can determine the amount of water needed if you know the dimensions of your swimming pool.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use your knowledge of area, surface area and volume to solve many problems. The gift is in a box that has a length of 9 inches, a width of 12 inches and a height of 4 inches Covering the box requires us to know the surface area. Using the surface area formula for a rectangular prism, we can determine: – SA = 2lw + 2wh + 2lh – SA = 2(9*12) + 2(12*4) + 2(9*4) – SA = 216 + 96 + 72 – SA = 384 cubic inches You need at least 384 cubic inches of wrapping paper to cover your friend’s box. You are going to wrap your friend’s birthday gift like the one shown in this picture. What is the least amount of wrapping paper needed to cover the box?

By the end of this lesson: You will be able to: – Solve real – world and mathematical problems involving area, volume, and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects These objects include triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms

Let’s get started! You will soon be able to: – Solve real – world and mathematical problems involving area, volume, and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects These objects include triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms
