Has Serious Academic Reform of College Athletics Arrived?  The Problem  Dr. Tublitz  GSR & APR  Penalties  How Colleges Have an Effect  Statistics  Why is it important?  Will it make a difference?

The Problem  NCAA schools have trouble graduating athletes  On average, D1 schools graduate 77%  #2 Memphis – 42%  Focuses around money  CBS is paying $6.1 billion for broadcast rights

Nathan Tublitz  Co-chairman of Coalition of Intercollegiate Athletics  Ensures that academics come before athletics

GSR & APR  GSR: Graduation Success Rate  Six year rolling average that measures how successful schools are at graduating athletes  APR: Academic Progress Rate  4 th year  A more real-time measure of academic progress  Numbers come out in May  Minimum score: 925

Penalties  Lost scholarships  Banishment from post-season tournament and bowl games  Good news for Tublitz

How Colleges Have an Effect  Possibility that colleges aren’t helping  Only concern is winning  Treated like royalty (expensive, state-of-the- art facilities, wine and dine)  Only set aside if they get hurt or put on the bench

Statistics  Percentage of teams affected by the penalty  Basketball – 45%  Football – 40%  All Division I Schools – 35%

Why Is It Important?  3% of high school basketball players get a Div. I scholarship  Of that 3%, only 3% go on to the NBA  Less than 0.9% of high school basketball players go to NBA  Aren’t receiving the tools they need to succeed beyond college  Hope that penalties will be effective because teams will want to avoid the inability to compete

Will It Make a Difference?  Should make some difference  American culture limits effectiveness
