My Career Compass to Becoming a Structural Engineer Planning 10 By Carson McIntosh

My Goals to Becoming a Structural Engineer Short TermLong Term My short term goals are to graduate from Riverside with B’s and A’s. I need to keep my math and science marks as high as possible as these are key courses for this program. I plan to do this by using a tutor and getting extra help when needed. I plan to continue baseball to hopefully obtain a scholarship to help with the costs. My long term goals would be to get a job as a civil engineer in a business in the lower mainland if possible. If not, I would be willing to move within Canada to attain the necessary experience. From there I would like to achieve a position as a Structural Engineer.

Traits to be Successful in this Occupation Communication Skills (Being able to communicate with the client so that they understand what you are doing as well as being able to relay your ideas in detail to the Architect which you work with) Tech Savvy (Be able to use technology to build models of your ideas or to calculate costs of things etc) Assessing Situations (For ex. You might need to analyze the conditions of the area you are working in and use the appropriate materials and quantities) Problem Solving Skills (There will be issues you need to work around. You also need to balance what the client wants with what is best for the structure) Work well under pressure (Not get stressed out knowing that you have to be very precise with what your doing. Failed calculations are catastrophic. Math/Science Skills (For calculating weight distribution and stress loads)

Salary & Years of Education According to tohttp:// Job=Civil_Engineer/Salary the average salary of a Civil Engineer is $61,917 but it can range anywhere from $44,912- $99,964 According to b=Structural_Engineer/Salary the average salary of a Structural Engineer is $66,772 but it can range anywhere from $49,796- $99,912 You need a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering which takes 4 years to complete

Job Description A day as a structural engineer would require you to plan, design and manage construction projects anywhere from simple bridge repairs to a new stadium. You would accurately calculate the different elements of structures such as weight distribution, stress loads etc. You would communicate with clients and the architect to figure out what materials to use and also how much to use. I think this job is well suited for me because I’ve always loved building things ever since I was a small kid. I am also very curious about what it takes to build stadiums, bridges, or even houses.

My Path to Obtaining A Bachelor Of Applied Science Degree Admission Requirements (Used toward GPA) A minimum overall average of 70% in 5 gr.12 courses Meet UBC’s Language Requirements English 12/ Chem. 12/Physics 12 Principles of Math 12 or Pre-Calculus 12 Admission is competitive and people are accepted based on GPA Admission Requirements (Not used for GPA) English 11 Language 11 Chem. 11/Physics 11 Pre Calc. 11 or Foundations 12 Social Studies 11 Other Information This program takes four to five years to complete to complete at The University of British Columbia.
