3 Skills Needed for Future Success What is Ramp-Up? – Develop knowledge, skills, habits for postsecondary success Five Ramp-Up Pillars Academic, Admissions, Career, Financial, Personal/Social Ramp-Up Tools – Readiness Rubric and Postsecondary Plan Why Start Preparing for College Now? – The earlier the better – You will have more options after high school – Better chance of getting accepted to Colleges of interest

4 Identifying Strengths It is important that you know your strengths – Everybody is smart or has talents In different areas – It is important that young people Build on those strengths Building strengths enhances success in – High School – College – Careers Strengths are not static (unchangeable) – Can be developed and changed over time

5 College and Career Exploration Career Clusters: group of related occupations – Find careers and colleges of interest – Make strategic plans for high school Stem Careers – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – Careers with some of the biggest area of growth 2-year degrees can be valuable – Prepares for many high-skilled careers – Less expensive: transfer to 4-year school

8 EXPLORE Test Results The EXPLORE test shows – Your academic strengths and weaknesses – Ways to improve your academic skills – Careers and career clusters of interest Three important points for careers of interest – Education needed – Salary – Expected Opportunity and Growth

9 Postsecondary Costs Average annual tuition – Two-year college: $2,693 – Private four-year college: $28,500 Three common types of financial aid – Grants, Scholarships, Work Study College financial aid packages – Some 4-year schools offer good financial aid packages – When students do well in high school They have more scholarships opportunities
