Attitudes to Learning

Attitudes to Learning are split into 7 areas Attendance Punctuality Behaviour Effort Homework Uniform Prepared for Learning

They are given a colour each half-term for each of the 7 areas.

Parents will be made aware of these through TLCs and Reports!.

Less than 90% Attendance Between 90 – 95% Over 95% Attendance

Late to school more than twice. Late back to class more than 5 times. Late to school 1 – 2 times or late back to class up to 5 times. Always on Time It is not just about the mornings…

Behaviour Referral. More than 5 reflections in a term. Up to 5 reflections. Comments made by other adults regarding behaviour or attitude. No Reflections or Referrals. No comments from other members of staff or supply teachers.

Aveley Primary Sanctions Policy

Star of the Week – for those children who consistently show excellent effort. Achievement Assemblies – Each year group has a set day per term. The children receive a leaf which is added to the tree and are mentioned on the newsletter. The Green Room – for those children who have all areas in their attitudes to learning as green.

At Aveley Primary we have high expectations of behaviour… …but sometimes, a small number of people do not always keep to these expectations.

Step 1 2 Warnings In some cases 2 warnings may not be appropriate! may not be appropriate! e.g. If this has happened before.

Final Warning “This is your final warning, do you understand? In some circumstances a reflection will be given.

Time Out A Step 2 Sent to an area of the classroom to calm down/reflect. Who, When and Why sheet to be filled in. This can also entail loss of playtime/lunchtime.

Step 3 Sent to another classroom, escorted by an adult. Who, When and Why sheet to be filled in. This will also entail loss of playtime/lunchtime! Time Out B

Step 4 Sent to spend up to half a day with a Phase Leader or Mrs Kidney. Who, When and Why sheet to be filled in. Letter sent home to parents Referral given Possible loss of clubs/playtime Time Out C

Step 5 Meeting between parents, phase leader and class teacher. Feedback given on each lesson. Must be a marked improvement. If there is no improvement in behaviour, Miss Shadbolt will become involved. On Report

Step 6 Meeting between teacher, phase leader, parents and Miss Shadbolt. Referral given Clear targets to stay in school If there is no improvement then it is taken further. Behaviour Contract

Step 7 Work in a separate part of the school building. No contact with other children. No playtimes/lunchtimes No Clubs. If there is no improvement then the next step is followed. Internal Exclusion (3 days+)

Step 8 Not allowed to return to school for the stated number of days. Upon return a contract will need to be followed. Short Term Exclusion (1-5 days)

Step 9 Not allowed to return to school for the stated number of days. Upon return a contract will need to be followed. Long Term Exclusion (Up to 45 days )

Step 10 Not allowed to return to school, another school will need to be found for you to attend. Permanent Exclusion

Occasionally applies themselves to their work and may participate in activities. Generally works to the best of their ability and participates in some activities. Always tries their best in all their work.

Feedback The feedback children receive on their work has changed. They will have less written comments but will still be recognised for the effort they make on every piece of work. In their books you will see stamps and sometimes stickers. The children know what the different colour stamps mean.

Homework rarely completed. Rarely reads at home. Homework diary rarely in school/lost. Usually completes homework set. Reads occasionally at home (1-3 times) Homework diary usually available. Homework set always completed. Read 4 – 5 times per week. Homework diary signed and in school every day.

We expect children to read 4 – 5 times per week. Reading recorded in the Home/School Diary.

Any home/school communication should be recorded in this. Reflections will be recorded here Should be signed by the parent at the end of the week (teacher will sign on the following Monday).

Will be set on a given day each week (dependent on class). Literacy homework will be given weekly/fortnightly depending on the type of homework. My Maths (online) – there will be a homework club available every Monday. Reading Review – to be completed fortnightly.

Each child will receive a spelling booklet. Spellings are given weekly. Children are expected to complete one page a week (no more). They will be tested at the end of the week. Instructions can be found in the spelling booklet.

Has to be regulary reminded about school uniform. Rarely has P.E. kit. Usually in school uniform. Needs reminder about shirts being tucked in/correct footwear/nail varnish. Sometimes does not have P.E. kit. Always in school uniform. P.E. kit always in school. Follows dress code including hair tied back; school shoes; no nail varnish etc.

School Uniform The full school uniform can be found in the Homework Diary. However please note that children should wear black shoes. Hair must be tied back.

School P.E. Kit Your child’s P.E. kit should be in school every day (even if they are not expecting to do do P.E). Every child should have: a white P.E. top, navy shorts, Plimsolls (indoor) and trainers (outdoor). We recommend that children have a tracksuit for the winter months.

Rarely Prepared for school. Sometimes forgets reading book etc. Always has the correct equipment.

Prepared for Learning Each day your child should bring/have on their table: Their current reading book. Homework Diary. Pencil case (if applicable) Any other books they might need. We also recommend children bring a small water bottle into class with them.

Mentoring File/New TLC Format Every child will have their own file – this file will stay with them up to Year 6. Your child will meet (during the school day) their ‘mentor’ – this will either be the class teacher or the phase leader. They will discuss, and set, targets and how they think they are doing. Parents will then come to one of the evening sessions to briefly discuss which targets your child has – also having an opportunity to look through the folder.

Other Useful Information How will you know if your child is doing as well as they should? Teachers assess children all the time, sometimes formally (e.g. assessment weeks) but more commonly through observations and feedback during lessons. In addition to the TLC meetings, Parents receive termly reports explaining what their child has achieved in the last term. The reports will no longer refer to levels. Under the new assessment framework children are assessed on how they perform in relation to expectations for children nationally in the year group they are in. When details of the National Assessment Framework are finalised we will ensure this is shared with parents.

Other Useful Information Concerned? – Please contact your child’s class teacher, either in person or through the homework diary. If the concern continues/is unable to be resolved please contact the Phase Leader. Parent Drop ins – these will happen on a fortnightly basis – teachers will be available in classrooms from 3.20 – 3.40 on the dates published. These are for general queries – if you have a concern that requires a more in-depth conversation - please use this time to make an appointment. Coffee Mornings – These are advertised on the newsletter and are are a good chance to meet other parents as well as make suggestions on how the school can support you/your child further. Some phase leaders may be available during this time.

Ways to Keep Updated Blogs – Your children’s work is often posted/class updates given. They always like to see parents commenting Newsletter – Weekly Newsletter will keep you up to date. Website – – Copies of letters etc. are posted for you to download. Twitter – the most up-to-date information quickly.
