The Lost Colony Chapter 4 Section 3 Date: Pg: 66-69 Why was John White put in charge of the second Roanoke colony? Had participated on the Amadas and Barlowe expedition and the attempt to settle Roanoke the first time. Drew maps and made water color drawings on previous trips. How was the second attempt to colonize different than the first attempt? included 17 women and 9 children each man were given 500 acres of land Would not have to serve the governor Would settle at Chesapeake rather than Roanoke because it was more accessible by sea. What did the new arrivals find? destroyed fort but most houses were still intact bones of one of the fifteen men left behind from the previous attempt to settle Why did the settlers stay in Roanoke rather than go on to Chesapeake? Fernandes stated it was too close to winter White knew that as long as they stayed on the ship, Fernandes would be in charge.

What happened next? George Howe was attacked and killed by Native Americans from the mainland. Manteo assured the settlers that the NA was a member of Wingina’s tribe. Manteo is christened and made Lord of Roanoke as a result of his loyalty and service to the colonies. Virginia Dare is the first child of English parents born in North America.

Why did John White leave the Roanoke colony to return to England? Arrived too late to plant seeds to raise food NA had little to food to share

What happened next? Made plans to move the colony to a more suitable location. Arranged to leave a sign to indicate their location and put a cross over the name if in danger. England is at war with Spain and White can’t return. England defeats the Spanish Armada

What did John White find when he returned to his colony after three years? White returns to the same location from which departed. Colony is deserted Sea chests were buried and uncovered Covers torn from books, maps taken from frames and damaged by rain. The words CRO and Croatan

Winds blew them off course from the West Indies to England. Did White ever look for the Lost Colony? What were some factors involved? Nightfall A storm Winds blew them off course from the West Indies to England. Never able to get another expedition back to the New World. No one knows what happened.
