22 October 2015 Exchange Programme 2016 – 2017 Briefing Session Exchange Programmes in China

Arts 2 Overview Eligibility Selection Criteria Financial Assistance Credit transfer Application Procedure Agenda Today

Arts 3 Eligibility What is the difference between HKUWW and FAEP? HKU Worldwide Exchange Programme (HKUWW) offer semester and full year exchange at over 300 University level partners. The application opens to students from all 10 faculties. It is administered by the Office of International Student Exchange. There will be a late round recruitment in March. Faculty of Arts Exchange Programme (FAEP) offers strong programmes in Arts and Humanities in selected host institutions. The application opens only to BA or BA/BEd students. There is no second round recruitment.

Arts 4 Can I apply for both programmes? To maximize your chance of study abroad, you should apply both HKUWW & FAEP Can I apply for exchange programmes if I am a freshman? We accept applications from year 1 students but some host institutions may require applicants to be year 2 students when they submit their application. Can I study abroad in my final year? Yes, but please make sure that you follow the Faculty’s credit transfer guidelines and study appropriate courses overseas so that you can transfer credits and fulfill the major and graduation requirements. Eligibility

Arts 5 Selection Criteria Which GPA will be considered for exchange application? We will take into consideration of your CGPA in semester 1. How do you select students to go on exchange? Is S/he Ready?” Academic Standing Statement of Purpose Personality, Outlook and Perspectives Communication Skills Potential as a Good Ambassador of the Arts Faculty and the University and Hong Kong as a whole Extra-curricular Activities Interview Performance

Arts 6 Selection Criteria I have applied for both Faculty exchange programme and HKUWW. Will I get two offers? / How are you going to coordinate the result with OISE? / Would it affect the chance of getting HKUWW offer if I apply for Faculty exchange programme? In the online application of the Faculty exchange programme, we require applicants to provide a list of their top 6 preferred universities combining what they have chosen in the FAEP and HKUWW. We will coordinate the result with OISE according to the list. There will be only one offer to you either from the Faculty or OISE.

Arts 7 Financial assistance How much will study abroad cost? The cost varies depending on the location and length of the programme. You are required to pay for the HKU tuition fee while studying overseas. You are also responsible for the airfare, accommodation insurance, local transportation, food and living expense

Arts 8 Financial assistance Are there any scholarships available? All successful applicants of HKUWW and FAEP with a CGPA, at the semester before their departure, of 3.0 or more will be eligible to receive a HKUWW scholarship. Scholarship amount is $4000 for a semester. At the Faculty level, there are Run Run Shaw Scholarship and Arts Student Development Fund to support student to study abroad. Details of application will be announced in March 2016.

Arts 9 Financial assistance What if my CGPA is lower than 3.0? Students can apply for HKU China 1,000 Exchange Programme Fund through China Affairs Office / China Vision. It covers your accommodation cost and part of the living expense while studying in China. Avoidance of double subsidy Students must declare that they will not apply for any alternate funding from HKU Office of International Exchange (OISE) or any other scholarship offered by the University for their participation in the Programme to avoid double subsidies of the University Funding.

Arts 10 Other Financial Assistance Subsidy on Exchange for Post-secondary Students by HKSAR Government – Education Bureau –Mean-tested grant up to HK$15,000 –Means-tested student financial assistance recipients provided by Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) under Tertiary Student Finance Scheme (TSFS) or Financial Assistance Scheme for Post-secondary Students (FASP); OR –Students’ families are the recipients provided by Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) First-in-the-Family Education Fund (CEDARS) –Usually HK$ 10,000 –For full-time and full-degree undergraduate –Being the first-generation university students in their families –Low monthly household income and assets

Arts 11 Credit Transfer Will study abroad defer graduation? If students plan ahead and follow the Faculty’s credit transfer guidelines, there is no reason graduation will be delayed. Is credit transfer easier if I apply for FAEP? Credit transfer procedures are the same for HKUWW and FAEP applicants (applying for HKUWW won’t reduce the chance of credit transfer). For the procedures, please read the credit transfer guidelines: er_guidelines.pdf er_guidelines.pdf

Arts 12 Credit Transfer When do I need to submit the credit transfer application? Parts I and II of the credit transfer application form should be submitted to the Arts Faculty Office via at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the exchange semester at the host institution. How many courses should I take at the host institution? You need to take full course load required by the host institution and keep your departments / the Faculty informed about any course changes.

Arts 13 Credit Transfer Can I do credit transfer if I go to the universities in China? Students will gain 30 credits if they take full load in a semester at the host institutions in China. If they take an underload of study there, the total of credit transfer will be in a multiple of 6 credits.
