African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. They are slightly larger than their Asian cousins and can be identified by their larger ears that look somewhat like the continent of Africa. (Asian elephants have smaller, rounded ears.) They grow 8.2 to 13 feet (2.5 to meters) from shoulder to toe and weigh 5,000 to 14,000 lbs. (2,268 to 6,350 kilograms) Size and weight

Elephants eat roots, grasses, fruit, and bark, and they eat a lot. An adult elephant can consume up to 300 pounds (136 kilograms) of food in a single day. Both male and female African elephants have tusks so they use them to dig for food and water and strip bark from trees. Diet

African elephants of course live in Africa as they don’t have a pacific name. It is the same as Asian elephants as they are native to Asia. One subspecies of African elephant, known as the forest elephant, lives in the rain forest. The forest elephant lives in the equatorial forests in the central and western regions of the African continent. Other species live on flat land usually surrounded in trees and covered in grass for food. Habitat and Location

Elephants don't hunt anything because their herbivores, they only eat plants and grass. It is strange since they are such big animals that you would think they would be able to kill. The only thing that they hunt for is food! What do they hunt?

At the turn of the 20th century, there were a few million African elephants and about 100,000 Asian elephants. Today, there are an estimated 450, ,000 African elephants and between 35, ,000 wild Asian elephants. Male elephants are called bulls and females are called cows. After mating, the cow will be pregnant for around 22 months. When the baby elephant is finally born, it can weigh around 200 lbs. (91 kg) and stand about 3 feet (1 m) tall. A baby elephant is called a calf. Other Information

African elephants are endangered and it is mostly up to habit loss but it is also poachers that poach them for their tusks which are made of ivory. More than a ton of elephant ivory tusks made in 3 months can be worth up to $1.4 million which is a lot of money for poachers. How are they endangered?

How we can help?
