Potato Investigation Determining how fresh and saltwater effect organisms.

Salt Marshes After watching the video on salt marshes, be prepared to explain what types of organisms are equipped to survive in these climates.

Use the information below to answer the following item Use the information below to answer the following item. Plants grow in various environments. Some plants, like mangroves, grow in salty wetlands. Mangroves have specialized structures that prevent salt from entering their cells. Other mangroves have specialized glands that can excrete excess salt. What is the disadvantage of having too much salt in a body system? What effect will it have on cells? (Adapted from HSA Public Release 2009)

Potato Salt Water Lab We are going to observe the effects of salt water on living organisms first hand. This experiment will help you to determine how salty waters effect organisms.

Set Up A Piece of Paper for our next lab “Potato LAB” Scientific Question: What will happen to a Potato that is left in water over night? Hypothesis: If I leave a Potato in water then… Variables and Procedures: List to my directions! Write out the procedure in your own words Independent Variable: Dependent Variable: Control:

Procedure Fill your beaker with enough water to cover the Potato. Weigh your Potato using the digital scale. Measure your Potato using a ruler. Leave the Potato in over night to see what happens.

Quantitative Data Collection Weight of Potato (scale) Width of Potato (ruler) First Day Second Day Qualitative Data Collection Record observations about your Potato. Day 1 Day 2

Absent yesterday? Use someone else’s data from yesterday to complete your lab report. DAY 2 Potato Lab Measure your Potatoes. Record both quantitative and qualitative observations. Create a bar graph to show the change in weight of your Potato from yesterday to today. Respond to the “Potato Lab BCR” for your conclusion.

Exit Quiz Basic Recall Make sure you know these words!! Osmosis Diffusion Active Transport Passive Transport Solute Solvent
