“SHE’S A WITCH” Scientific Investigations

How will you report your findings? For this lab you will not create a full lab report, but you will work with your partner to write an APA formatted lab report including the following components: Background Information/Research Purpose Hypothesis Materials Procedure Data Conclusion

How am I being assessed (graded)? Can you follow the class directions for writing a lab report? Can you use Windows Live and/or Google Docs to help create your lab report? Can you use the scientific method to answer a question?  Remember that this means making logical decisions throughout your experiment. Don’t do something in the lab that isn’t for a reason, you will have to explain this reasoning in your lab report.

Purpose of our investigations How do Temperature, Pressure and Concentration affect the rate of Diffusion?

Research What is diffusion? Where does diffusion happen?/Can you give examples of diffusion? What is rate? How can you measure it? What factors affect the rate of diffusion? How many variables can you test at one time?

Question/Purpose What lab can you develop that will test a factor that may affect the rate of diffusion across a cell membrane?  How can we change temperature?  How can we change pressure?  How can we change concentration?

Test Materials? What types of cells can we use to actually see change due to diffusion? What are some solutes that we have worked with this year? How can you change  Temperature  Pressure  concentration

Developing the Lab and Presenting Data Group pre- work  Brainstorm on what you and your group might like to do  Form Hypothesis  Add to list of materials  Create Procedure  Make sure that you are creating a procedure that will actually let you measure the rate!!!!!  Get Teacher Approval Work Day  Gather Data  Quantitative  Qualitative  Graphs/Charts/Picture s  Form Conclusion

Presenting your data  A formal lab report will be created in class on ______________and on your own as homework.  This will be a partner written lab report.  Formal lab reports will be due ____________  Lab reports must be edited by a peer prior to handing in!

Materials At lab Tables: Timers (2) Graduated Cylinders (2) Medium Beakers (2) Large Beaker and Hot Plate Scale Thermometers (2) Middle Lab Table:  Cells (elodea, potato, onion, celery, simulated cells)  Pipettes  Slides and Coverslips  Distilled Water  Ice Cart at front of room:  Sugar/Starch/Salt  Indicators (Iodine, Benedicts)  Extra Timers  Extra Beakers  Rulers  Extra Thermometers  Plastic Spoons  Oven Mits  Tweezers/Tongs  Test Tubes  Weigh Boats  Floss  Scissors You must tell your teacher if you need anything in addition to these items.

How do you graph and interpret rate? Line graph or bar graph? Equations/analysis in the conclusion of your paper?
