1 Bellwork 12-1-2016 Answer on your sheet of notebook paper.
Students placed a raw egg without its shell into a highly concentrated solution of sugar. If the amount of sugar in the solution is greater than in the egg, which of these is most likely to occur? (Hint: There is a high concentration of water inside the egg.) A             Water will flow into the egg and cause the egg to expand. B             Water will flow out of the egg and cause the egg to shrink. C             The sugar will dissolve the egg. D             The sugar will break the egg into pieces. 2 Bellwork review Students placed a raw egg without its shell into a highly concentrated solution of sugar. If the amount of sugar in the solution is greater than in the egg, which of these is most likely to occur? (Hint: There is a high concentration of water inside the egg.)  A)Water will flow into the egg and cause the egg to expand. Incorrect, water will not flow into the egg. B) Water will flow out of the egg and cause the egg to shrink.Correct, water will             flow out of the egg (from a high concentration of water to a low concentration of water)   C) The sugar will dissolve the egg. Incorrect  D) The sugar will break the egg into pieces. Incorrect

3 Objectives Students will be able to analyze how plant and animal cells are organized to carry on the processes of life.   SPI Explain how materials move through simple diffusion.   Success Criteria: I can explain simple diffusion and osmosis.

4 TOC #? Osmosis of an Egg pg.?

5 Osmosis of an Egg Copy this chart into your notebook.
Group Control #1 Control #2 Control #3 Independent Variable Dependent Variable #1 (Control) #2 (experimental) #3 (experimental)

6 Osmosis of an Egg *  The egg shell has been dissolved and what is left is the cell membrane and everything inside the cell membrane. *  The inside of the egg is made mostly of water. Let's measure the mass of each egg. And record it in our chart. Record questions in your journal: 1.  If water moves from an area of high concentration to low concentration (osmosis), how can we make water move out of the egg? 2. How can we make water move into the egg?

7 Osmosis of an Egg Lets fill in the blanks
Osmosis of an Egg Lets fill in the blanks.  What do you think the eggs will look like tomorrow? Group Control #1 Control #2 Control #3 Independent Variable Dependent Variable #1 (Control) #2 (experimental) #3 (experimental)

8 Practice Questions A student adds drops of dye to a beaker of room- temperature water, as shown in the diagram below. Which diagram best shows the end result of diffusion?

9 In questions like this, water is what will move. Let's draw a picture.
A cell has a large concentration of salt molecules inside of the cell and a small concentration of salt molecules outside of the cell. Which of the following is most likely to happen to this cell? A Water molecules will diffuse out of the cell B Water molecules will diffuse into the cell C Salt molecules will diffuse out of the cell D Salt molecules will diffuse into the cell

10 The diagrams below show concentrations of particles inside and outside a cell. In which situation would particles move OUT of the cell through diffusion?

11 EGG OSMOSIS DRAWINGS On a blank piece of paper, create a drawing with captions that explains how the water moves in and out of the egg (cell).  Be sure to identify where high concentrations and low concentrations of water a located.
