GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT

Appendix A: Language “Ah Ha! Moment” I’d like to discuss more. This seems confusing. This connects to____________.

Framework for teaching Grammar throughout the Writing Process 1.Share a model text depicting a grammatical concept based on common student errors. 2.Generate new text reflecting the grammatical concept; encourage discussion and reflection about the grammatical structure that you are highlighting. 3.(Optional): Have students compose in small groups or in pairs. 4.Have students individually compose a sentence or sentences reflecting the grammatical concept and share their work. 5.Ask students to apply the grammatical concept in their daily writing. 6.Examine the students’ work, individually as well as collectively, to see what scaffolding is needed in the revision process, or processes. Grammar to Enrich & Enhance Writing

Resource for Teaching Grammar throughout the Reading Process /FrontPage

REMEMBER… Teach Real World Grammar (Common Core for Common Life) Show students how Grammar helps us communicate more effectively Show students how Grammar can affect our impression of one another (Remember the incorrect form of "their" for the children's learning software?!) Provide them with skills to be independent learners--> Grammar Rules change over time and can be subjective or contested The teaching of grammar should be intentional

Other ideas Provide similar text from over various time periods. Compare and contracts how conventions were used as a means of showing students the evolution of Writing Conferences Pull a text of high interest for students (i.e. sports, celebrities), ask students to go through the piece justifying why various conventions and mechanics were used/adding and omitting conventions and mechanics to change the information being communicated/discuss how the structure and craft shapes meaning and tone
