Expectations and Goals We have high expectations for our students. Our belief is high expectations equals high achievement. We want your child to succeed and will do all we can to achieve that goal. We expect the students to do the same. We expect each student to put forth their best effort in order to reach their fullest potential. We believe in personal responsibility as well as teaching independence. Students, parents and teacher should all be taking an an active role in education.

Daily Schedule 9:00-9:15- Arrival/Do Now 9:15-10:45- Math 10:45-11:45- Reading Workshop 11:45-12:45- Lunch/Recess 12:45-1:30- Writing Workshop 1:30-1:58-Word Study 1:58-2:38-Special 2:40-3:15- Science/Social Studies 3:15-3:30- Pack up and Dismissal

Specials Schedule 1:58-2:38 Monday- PE Tuesday- Library Wednesday- PE Thursday- Music Friday- Art

Classroom Policies and Procedures Homework will be assigned Monday- Thursday. Occasionally there will be homework over the weekend. Students are expected to read for 20 minutes each night and fill in their home reading log. All homework assignments as well as tests and quizzes will be written in their planners. Thursday folders will have any forms/flyers from the schools. Please look for graded work in the folder as well.

Classroom Policies and Procedures cont. Inappropriate behavior will be dealt with accordingly. Consequences can include: warning, loss of recess time or privilege, note or phone call home or trip to the office. Appropriate behavior will be praised continually and rewarded accordingly.

Curriculum ELA Valley Central uses the Literacy Collaborative Framework. It includes a Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop. Minilessons guide the students in each of the workshops which will be based on the required Common Core standards. Students will be assessed weekly on these standards. Reading Workshop includes guided and independent reading. Assessment is based on observation, anecdotal notes, participation, guided reading assignments and standards assessments. We will also be working on grade level reading passages and questions as well Close Reading.

Curriculum cont. ELA Writing Workshop includes a personal narrative, informative/expository, persuasive/opinion, poetry- revise and publish. Word Study(Spelling/Vocabulary)- Spelling will focus on one rule/principle per week with daily practice in the classroom and a test on Friday. All work will be in their word study notebook that can be taken home to study. We will also be starting vocabulary with four words per week. Please look for these in the word study notebook as well as homework assignments.

Curriculum cont. Mathematics In Grade 5, instructional time will focus on three critical areas: (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); (2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and (3) developing understanding of volume. Interactive Notebooks The purpose of the interactive notebook is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers. Interactive notebooks are used for class notes as well as for other activities where the student will be asked to express his/her own ideas and process the information presented in class. Our plan is to use one for reading and one for math.

New York State Testing 2016 NYS ELA April 5th-7th- This will include short stories, articles and/or poems with multiple choice, short response and extended response questions. NYS Math- April 13 th -15th. This will include multiple choice, short and extended response.

Extra Curricular Activities Chorus takes place on Mondays from 2:40- 3:20. It will begin September 21 th. This is during our Science/Social Studies block. Band lessons take during the instructional day as well. Students are expected to seek out and make up all missed work due to either band or chorus.
