2 Overview Welcome to the fourth grade! You and your child are going to experience a year full of academic challenges and fun-filled activities. Being a fourth grade student is exciting, and at the same time, places many responsibilities upon the student!

5 National Common Core State Standards and Essential Standards Starting with the 2012-2013 school year, the new Common Core State Standards and the North Carolina Essential standards were taught and assessed. For more information visit : http://www.ncpublicschools.org/

6 How Will My Child Be Assessed? Students will be assessed both formally and informally throughout the year. There will be quarter tests at the end of the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd quarters and an end of grade test at the end of the year. Students will be tested at the end of the year in reading and math. There are no retakes. Students only have one chance to pass.

7 Parent Portal WSFCS uses the Parent Portal for parents to access student grades. Grading Scale for grades 3-5 at Morgan: 40% Tests/Projects 35% Quizzes 25% Classwork (Homework)

8 Field Trips October: Tanglewood $5.00 by Friday, October 10 December: Old Salem/Candle Tea $14.00 by Friday, November 21st March: Hiddenite TBA May: Raleigh $10.00 down payment Friday, December 5th

9 Reading The reading curriculum will include: exploring different genres and novel studies, main idea and details, text elements, sequencing, cause and effect, inference, compare and contrast, and fact and opinion. Novel studies are enhanced with many learning activities as well as research. Wordly Wise focuses on vocabulary development. LOTS OF NONFICTION/INFORMATIONAL WORK!!

10 Writing Yearly Overview: Each quarter students will be given a prompt where they will need to write a five-paragraph paper using the correct steps in the writing process. Reports on informational topics will also be included. This includes narrative, poetry, and content pieces. Students will write several other pieces to include free write/journal entries, etc.

11 Math The math curriculum this year will consist of the following: place value, addition and subtraction, measurement, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, and geometry. Problem Solving and critical thinking will be taught throughout the year. Quarterly projects will encourage hands- on learning.

12 Science Yearly Overview: The science curriculum will include the following units: Ecosystems, Foods and Nutrition, Earth ’ s History and Earth in the Universe, Matter and Properties, Rocks and Minerals, Forces and Motion, and Energy Conservation.

13 Social Studies Yearly Overview: North Carolina Exploration and Colonization, Migration and Settlement Patterns, Constitution and Government, Growth, Development, Symbolism, and Personal Financial Literacy.

14 Teamwork Science and Social Studies will be taught by Stacey Self. Enrichment time will be with your child’s assigned 4 th grade teacher and involve extended SS/S, and at times Reading.
