Notes Teen Living 2.01 Discuss factors that affect families Recommend ways to strengthen families.

Family – Group of 2 or more people who are related by birth, marriage, adoption, or other circumstances. Types of Families: 1. Nuclear: Husband, Wife and children (biological). 2. Single – Parent: One parent (head of household) and children. 3. Blended: Husband, Wife and children from previous marriages. 4. Couples without children: Husband and wife. 5. Extended: Other relatives living in the home with a family like grandparent(s), aunts, uncles, or cousins. * Families are formed in many different ways for example: birth, adoption, marriage, or foster care (guardianship).

Family Life Cycle: basic stages that families go through in life. 1. Beginning: 2 people marry, establish a home together. 2. Childbearing: Couple adjusts to parenthood (maturating & taking on the responsibilities of being a parent). 3. Childrearing: Parents focus on rearing (raising) their children from infancy through the teenage years. 4. Launching: Children leaving (moving out on their own) from home. 5. Empty nest: Couple develop new interests, plan for retirement, and become grandparents. 6. Retirement:: Couple retires, enjoys more leisure (free) time and adjusts to aging.

Family Life Keeping feelings to oneself will weaken a family. Family members can share responsibilities by taking turns doing various chores around the home. Abuse can be classify in three areas: emotional, physical, or sexual.

Family Life A crises (stressful situation) will always bring changes of some type in the families life. Teenage couples have a higher divorce rate than older adults due to the fact of commitment level and maturity level. If a parent loses his/her job, a teenage in the house could help by getting a part time job. The key to managing work, rest, and play is maintaining a balance among the three.

Family Life Leaving a note for others or writing a schedule on a family calendar are examples of good communication. Family members should show respect for other’s by knocking on closed doors before entering. Setting limits and teaching children appropriate behavior is part of the socialization under family functions.

Family Life Family conflicts occur when family members disagree with one another. When families merge or blend and start to share a home and resources together conflicts can occur. Each individual must come to the knowledge that a “sacrifice”(it is going to cost you) on their part must be made and each person will have to compromise within the relationship.

Family Life Family functions (different needs being met): –Meeting physical needs. –Promoting emotional growth (love & acceptance). –Shaping social development (how to behave toward others or having manners). * Preserving cultural heritage: passing on family traditions, rituals, or beliefs. - Aiding intellectual growth. -Guiding moral growth (code of conduct & set of values).

Family Life Codependency allows someone else’s problem to control your behavior. Teens should take on their fair share of the home responsibilities (chores) because each person contributes to the total makeup (needs) of the family. Suggestions on how a family should solve problems: get help when needed, look for positive outcomes in all types of situations, and tackle the problem together (unity) and not by yourself.

Family Life The frequency of divorce in the US from the past 20 years has increased. If one family member abuses drugs or alcohol the whole family is affected (the actions of one family member will have influence on others in the household). A major conflict (problem) is like having a disagreement with your parent(s). You should respect (give honor) the position (office) that they hold in your life as being your parent(s)(considering that they themselves are in the right according to the law).
