CH 11 Section 3. War with Pirates and Indians.

Mediterranean Pirates from the Barbary Coast demanded tribute from European and American traders.

Victory at Sea Jefferson attacked Tripoli and refused to pay any more tributes. Admiral Stephen Decatur was the hero.

Embargo Act (1807) Frustrated by British impressment and harassment at sea of Americans, the US prohibited trade with all foreign nations. However, this hurt American merchants.

The Battle of Tippecanoe Shawnee chief Tecumseh didn’t think that Indians should sell their land to the whites. William Harrison provoked an attack and destroyed Tecumseh’s Indian Confederation.

Slaughter!

Peace vs. War? Hawk The Federalists wanted to avoid war with Britain, but President James Madison believed that a state of war already existed.
