3 Piracy on the Mediterranean Sea
Pirates from North Africa = Morocco, Algiers, Tripoli, & Tunis 1801 Tripoli demands payment from US TJ refuses Tripoli declares war TJ sends blockade Americans captured Peace treaty signed in 1805 (US paid $60,000 for release of prisoners)

4 Violating Neutral Rights
British & French at war, 1803 (US neutral) By 1805 they were trying to block us from trading French = search & seize ships caught trading with British

5 British Abuse British sailors deserted = stopped American ships to search (impressment) June 1807 = British warship, Leopard, stops American vessel, Chesapeake Chesapeake refuses to let Leopard search ship Leopard opens fire = killing three crew members Set off anti-British fury

6 Trade Embargo Act, December 1807
Banned imports & exports to ALL foreign countries Disaster = unemployment rose, couldn’t trade tobacco or cotton to European markets, price for wheat fell Repealed in March 1809 Nonintercourse Act passes = prohibited trade with only Britain & France

7 II. TENSIONS RISE Election of 1808
Democratic Republicans choose James Madison Federalist choose Charles Pinckney Only support = NE states Madison wins, 122 electoral votes to 47

8 French & British 1810 = new trade law = direct trade with whoever lifted their trade restrictions first French continues seizing US ships Angry at French but Madison believe Britain was the bigger threat

9 Domestic Conflicts Ohio = state in 1803
Settlers moving onto Native land (by treaty) Tecumseh, Shawnee chief = confederacy of Native American nations in the northwest to halt white movement into Native land Backed by British (Canada) & Tenskwatawa (the Prophet)

Harrison (Indian Gov.) attacks Prophet forces flee American victory Tecumseh joins British

11 The War Hawks Republican congressmen Led by Henry Clay & John Calhoun
Supported increase in military spending Desire to expand land & nationalism Support war
