3 Give Peace a Chance Jefferson looks to make friends with foreign countries but avoid war The spread of trade and the expansion of the United States would cause trouble with other nations The United States could NOT control foreign actions and would soon have to confront France, England, and North Africa

The US benefited from European Wars, gaining land and trade, but by 1805 Britain began to prevent American trade to enemies France also enacted partial blockades putting the US in the middle of the conflict Britain also used impressments to hurt US trade including an attack on the Chesapeake which led to the death of 3 americans Jefferson would NOT declare war angering some americans

Jefferson sought to ban all foreign trade and passed the Embargo Act of 1807 which banned the US from all foreign ports and Closed American ports to Britain The Policy was a disaster and hurt the economy, especially farmers, merchants and Shippers When James Madison won the 1808 election the embargo laws had already been repealed Madison tried to ban trade with BOTH France and Britain, but that was also unsuccessful

6 United we Stand Americans became furious as Britain tried to Stir up trouble with Native Americans Tecumseh vowed to stop the loss of land to American settlers and tried to unite the Native American Tribes into one group

When the Miami, Delaware, and Potawatomi tribes agreed to sell over 3 million acres of land to William Henry Harrison, Tecumseh voided the sale After the Treaty of Fort Wayne, Native Americans Unified but it was too late As Tecumseh tried to unify other tribes, the Shawnee were defeated by Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe

8 NORTH…. After the loss at Tippecanoe, Tecumseh fled to Canada and formed an alliance with Great Britain Henry Clay and other American War Hawks demanded war against Britain They aimed to stop aid to the Native Americans and looked to push Britain out of Canada

9 This Means War!! Some Americans wanted Britain punished for their acts at sea Andrew Jackson wanted to end impressment and interference with American Ships Jackson also wanted to open up more US markets Congress declared war on Britain on June 18th, 1812 to put an end to British Actions against the US
