Plan for 2009 CALICE beam test with ScECAL + AHCAL + TCMT Jan-28 th CALICE TB Satoru Uozumi (Kobe)

Thing accomplished on Sep `08 running We have collected enough data to evaluate fundamental performances of ScECAL. – Response uniformity of extruded scintillator strips – Energy resolution – Linearity – Performance change with tilt angle (only 10 degrees) Successful combined data taking with AHCAL & TCMT – Both AHCAL and TMCT have been working perfectly without any big problems. First trial of the  0 run was successful. – Clean  0 mass peak observed. LED gain monitoring system (almost) successful – Still have some problems which needs to be debugged, but performance is OK for the first test system of gain monitoring.

Problems happened on Sep 08 Air gap inside ScECAL can not be reduced. Drift chamber 3 has been broken. – After very frequent trip of positive HV on Sep-, leak current grows to large. Repair underway at FNAL, seems to be a problem of electronics? LED system – Need to push re-init button on CMB slow control every time when we start the DAQ. – Pick-up noise observed on some channels which are located at specific position of frontend boards. – For some channels difficult to see pedestal-1pe peak separation in ahcGain run. A few (4-5) dead / noisy channels

Motivation for next data taking energy scan at more energy points - 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, 25, 30, 32 GeV - Both positive and negative beams available Take more  0 data at more energy points Position dependence of resolution / linearity Tilt angle scan (20, 30 degrees) higher energy pion (up to 60 GeV) data taking Run with revised system – DC3 back – LED system (not all the problems can be solved) – Temperature sensor Since the detectors are already built and debugged, Those can be achieved with minimum additional budget and man-power.

Things we can NOT do even in the next data taking Recover dead / noisy channels Remove all the electronics problem with the LED system Reduce ScECAL thickness

An idea of run plan Setup & LED commissioning … 7 days (without beam) commissioning with beam … 2 days MIP calibration … 4 days Energy scan with electrons … 6 days with pions … 4 days Position scan with electrons … 2 days  0 run … 3 days Tilt angle scan … 4 days Withdraw … 5 days (without beam) Total … 25 days with beam When ? Not before April (due to budget issue). Hopefully wish to avoid TILC09 (late April). Therefore first candidate will be May – mid June. Otherwise in summer ?

Necessary Man-Power Data taking shift : 2 persons x 2 shifts x 25 days = 100 psd. Mimimal requirement : – 4-5 (3-5 from ScECAL group) persons at FNAL – 2 persons on remote shift Will set-up remote shift room in Japan. – where and how? Run coordinator & Detector experts Satoru, Katsu from ScECAL group Need expert for HCAL, electronics and TCMT (It would be great if Alex and Ivo can join…)

Summary In Sep `08, We have taken satisfactory data for publication with ScECAL+AHCAL+TCMT. Finishing the test is one choice, but we can do some more interesting things with minimum additional cost. If we can have some help from CALICE colleagues, we are very happy to perform another data taking! – Help from Erik Ramberg, HCAL (Alex?), Ivo for CMB, and a few volunteers for DAQ shifts (local and remote).

Backups

‘08 Sep running Schedule Setup … Aug 17 th – Sep 3 rd (17 days) Detector commissioning … Sep 4 th – 8 th (5 days) MIP calibration … Sep 9 th – 13 th (4.5 days) Precise strip scan with MIP … Sep 13 th – 16 th (3 days) Energy scan with electrons … Sep 16 th – 20 th (4.5 days) with pions … Sep 21 th – 23 th (2.5 days)  0 run … Sep 23 th – 24 th (1.5 days) Tilt angle scan … Sep 25 th – 27 th (5 days) HCAL calibration … Sep 27 th – 29 th (3 days)

Collected datasets on Sep 08 Muon data for MIP calibration – Taken with 20x20 trigger – 2.1M events collected – At least 7k of good MIP events on each strip Precise strip scan with MIP – To evaluate strip response uniformity of improved scintillator strip Energy scan data with e - and  - – -32, -25, -16, -12, -6, -3, -1 GeV (-1 GeV is only for electron) – For electron runs, data collected both in central and uniform region. – 200 ~ 250k events collected at each energy, each position.  0 runs – Put iron target on beamline at 185 cm upstream from ECAL surface – Took data at -16, -25, -32 GeV with pion trigger, k events at each energy Tilt angle scan – Tilt detector for 10 degrees – Take electron & pion energy scan data
