2 MINERvA Detector 03/23/2015AEM - Minerva Test Beam 2 Status2 Minerva: Precision measurements of neutrino-nucleus cross sections Detector: Measure properties of particles exiting the nucleus Particles: Protons, neutrons, pions, electrons, … Test beam goal: Measure how well the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of the detector response of these particles describe the data.

9 Squeezed in Studies Both phases of T1041 finished early Beam characterization studies using electrons with Pb-Glass calorimeter Cherenkov efficiency studies with Pb-Glass calorimeter Reduce electrons with eighth inch lead sheet – Installed 3/19 – Main contaminant at low energies Reduce the amount of time needed for these studies in the next running period 03/23/2015AEM - Minerva Test Beam 2 Status9

10 Run Plan How many events are enough? – Don’t want to change configurations and then go back Commissioning data being examined in Arachne – Team of dedicated event scanners – Verify operation of systems from event lists provided by experts – Count the number of “good” events; We have preliminary run plan estimates showing we need about 4 weeks of steady data taking for ECAL/HCAL 03/23/2015AEM - Minerva Test Beam 2 Status10

11 Summary Commissioning time was successful – Systems improved and developed – Collected data for event scanning Used time efficiently between T1041 runs – Studies – Electron reduction with lead sheet Accelerator becoming more proficient with running MCenter and MTest simultaneously Adding finishing touches this week Ready for data next week Be prepared for other opportunities this year 03/23/2015AEM - Minerva Test Beam 2 Status11

13 1. Underground we shoot neutrinos at the Minerva detector. 2. The neutrinos interact with nuclei in the minerva detector and create particles. Different nuclear targets. 3. We measure the properties of these particles with Tracking, HCAL,and ECAL, and the Minos detector. 4. Define Tracking, HCAL, ECAL, and Minos with broad descriptions. 5. At test beam we are calibrating the Tracking, HCAL, and ECAL portions of the Minerva detector using a scaled down version of the detector. 6. The same calibration was done in 2010 for lower energies and a different beamline configuration. 7. In medium energy running the particles in the Minerva detector will have higher energies. 8. So we need to calibrate the Minerva detector with higher energy particles than in TB1. 9. Describe the additional systems added at test beam, ToF, veto system, camac data, trigger system,.... 9. Show some plots of the our current calibration and the energy region we plan on investigating. 10.
