Social Studies Textbook In depth look at our regions Used with S.S. workbook pages Textbook is available online A CLOSER LOOK AT OUR UNITED STATES!

Curriculum is shifting to more nonfiction text A combination of Reading book and novels (Stone Fox, A Cricket in Times Square, Freedom Train) HOTS Skills taught through literature (Making Inferences, Cause/Effect, Author’s Purpose, Figurative Language) Achieve 3000 Monthly Reading Calendar/Comprehension Log--, Please sign the calendar at the end of the month before your child turns in the calendar to me. This verifies you have seen your child reading. The more a child reads, the better reader they become!! LET’S READ!!!!!!!

Student A reads 30 minutes five nights of every week; Student B reads only 4 minutes a night...or not at all! Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week. Student A reads 30 min. x 5 times a week = 150 mins./week Student B reads 5 minutes x 5 times a week = 25 minutes Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month. Student A reads 600 minutes a month. Student B reads 100 minutes a month. Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year Student A reads 3600 min. in a school year. Student B reads 720 min. in a school year. Student A practices reading the equivalent of nine whole school days a year. Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice. What happens to these students by the end of 6th grade if they maintain these same reading habits: One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance!!

1.Pretest on Monday 2.Study words missed and challenge words (20 words) 3.Words will ALWAYS be written in planner. 4.Occasional class grade on Wednesday 5.Spelling Test every Friday **Spelling will be included in Language grades **Handwriting grade will come from Spelling tests.* What Do I Need to Know about Spelling?

Required to read and respond to literature; synthesize information and apply reasoning skills Alternating weeks of journal writing and DLR (Daily Language Review) Read one to two passages then write a composition 3-5 paragraphs including evidence from the text in response. Emphasis on writing to a prompt and constructed response short answers. Example: Write a story for your teacher about backpacking in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Describe the t things you might see and what might happen. Use details from BOTH passages to help you tell your story. Language Arts/Journal Writing
