AP Chemistry Mr Simms

WELCOME WELCOME TO AP AND DUAL CREDIT CHEMISTRY. Welcome to College People. You have chosen to take a difficult College Level Course. I congratulate you on that choice.

In this class you will study 1. The Structure of Atoms, Molecules and Ions. 2. Stoichiometry and Solution Stoichiometry. 3. Types of Chemical Reactions. 4. State of Matter. 5. Entropy and Enthalpy. 6. Atomic Structure and Nuclear Chemistry. 7. Bonding and Molecular Chemistry. 8. Organic Chemistry. 9. Properties of Solutions. 10. Kinetics 11. Equilibrium 12. Acids and Bases 13. Acid-Base Equilibrium 14. Electrochemistry and Transition Metals 15. Nuclear Chemistry

You will conduct laboratory investigations, apply scientific problem solving, and use critical thinking skills. It is important that you realize that chemistry is a concept- oriented course that emphasizes problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Practice and perseverance on the student’s part are essential. I strongly encourage students to become actively involved in this class by participating, asking questions, attending tutorials and using all available resources. Since this is a college course, there will be outside of class work. It is critical that you keep abreast of the homework.

Please contact me if there are any questions or concerns. The most effective way to contact me is by at my school address, I check my several times during the day at school, and frequently from home on nights and weekends.

Grades Grades are based on AP Standard, which is 75% Tests, and 25% Lab, Quizzes, and Homework. There is NO reassessment in this course. This is a cumulative course, which means that previously required material maybe on new tests.

TUTORING I will be available for tutoring and assistance on Monday and Tuesday after school, and Wednesday mornings. I have set aside Thursday after school for my AP STUDENTS only. It is critical that you get labs made up as soon as possible, and must be made up within 2 weeks. If you come of tutoring, I ask that you make a concerted effort to arrive in room 2615 as soon as possible after school.

MATERIALS A calculator with an “EE” or “exp” key, these are normally advertized as scientific calculators. You best choice is a TI 84, but most TI 30 series will do just fine. Pencil, pens and paper. A hard-cover composition notebook to write lab reports in. A separate notebook to take notes and keep track of your papers in.
