About Your Teacher:  Also teaches astronomy & runs the planetarium.  B.A. in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University, M.S. in chemistry from Cleveland State U.  Married to Jane for 32 years. Has two sons, David & Matthew.  Has been teaching in Lancaster for 18 years; worked in chemical industry for 15 years before that.  Lives in Circleville.

Why Take Chemistry?

Required by most four-year colleges! (Even if you’re not planning on majoring in a science.)

It has a lot of labs.

You get to use all that stuff you learned in Algebra I!

It teaches you about how the universe around you works – and that’s cool.

Stuff You’ll Need ASAP 1. Pencils or pens, paper for notes 2. Scientific Calculator – EE or EXP, log, ln 3. $ fee – pay to Mrs. Gardner

On lab days – no flip-flops or sandals You’ll need safety glasses – “Z-87” on the temple (shatter-resistant)

We will cover 15 chapters this year.

Making Measurements & the Math In Chemistry

Matter & Energy

Atomic Structure & the Periodic Table

Names & Formulas of Chemical Compounds H 2 SO 4 Nickel(II) nitrate Fe 2 (PO 4 ) 3 carbon dioxide Billy was a chemist, but Billy is no more, for what he thought was H 2 O was H 2 SO 4 !

Equilibrium & Reaction Rates

Nuclear Reactions & Energy

How do I earn a good grade?

1. Be here. Every day. 3. Do the HW and lab reports. 2. Take notes. If I write it on the board, you write it into your notes. 5. Study for quizzes & tests. 4. Be organized. 6. Check class website & PB weekly.
