Congress of Vienna Simulation Next Steps

Step 3 – Diplomacy Three major considerations: How do we make sure France is no longer a threat? How can we avoid future wars? How do we stop future revolutions from occuring

Step 3 - Diplomacy Questions to consider with other countries 1. Should France be left as one country? After the Napoleonic wars, can it be trusted to exist as a unified state? 2. If so, should France have a military? 3. What should be done with the many competing groups striving to take power in Germany and other parts of the former Holy Roman Empire? 4. Similar questions may be asked about the status of the various states striving for predominance in the Italian peninsula. 5. What alliances and treaties can be made in order to avoid future wars?

Map Requirement Each nation must ‘hammer out’ an agreement regarding borders on the map of Europe. Refer back to the maps before and after the real Congress of Vienna for ideas. I do not expect you as delegates to draw a detailed map of all of Europe’s future borders. Rather, I expect you to come up with a well-researched notion of your character and country’s policy and then to try to see that achieved on the major points under discussion. Ideally, all nations will produce a broad political framework that will serve as a guide for Europe in centuries to come, while dealing with crises and political intrigues which may arise along the way and change the course of the Congress.

Step 4 – Prep for Presentation Your group should make a simple presentation which outlines the agreements and decisions your country was able to make. YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THE LOGIC BEHIND THEM. You will have 20 minutes to prep, and then present in our “Congress on Century Blvd”

Homework Use textbook pages 238-241. READ them, particularly the last three pages. Who were the winners coming out of the Congress of Vienna? What were the long-term consequences of the decisions made there?
