Homework Thematic Essay due tomorrow.

Aim #2: How did the Congress of Vienna pave the way for an Age of Nationalism? Do Now - The Congress of Vienna had many goals, including: – “Turning back the clock.” – Establishing a balance of power. – Establishing lasting peace and stability in Europe. For each goal, explain how the Congress of Vienna tried to achieve it. Then, make a prediction for how successful you think the Congress will be at actually achieving this goal.

I. Results of the Congress of Vienna The French were required to return all territories Napoleon had taken. However, France remained intact, with roughly the same territory it had before the rise of Napoleon. The absolute monarchs of many European countries came back to power or expanded their power (Russia, Prussia, Austria) Britain and France adopted constitutional monarchies Thanks to the balance of power established by the Congress and the Holy Alliance that was formed between Austria, Prussia and Russia, Europe remained at peace for the next century. In the short term, VICTORY FOR CONSERVATIVES!

II. What was the legacy of the Congress of Vienna? Despite their efforts to undo the French Revolution, the leaders of the Congress of Vienna could NOT turn back the clock. The revolution had given Europe its first experiment in democratic government Although the experiment had failed, it set new political ideas in motion – People want to fight for democracy, independence, equality and nationalism

III. Congress of Vienna could not stop the growth of nationalism: A. Nationalism: 1. Love of one’s country, and believing that your country is superior to other countries. 2. The belief that people with a common culture and identity (live on the same land, have the traditions, language, religion, etc.) should have their own independent countries.

B. Questions to Consider 1. What effect do you think nationalism will have on the people of Latin America and South America who are still under the colonial rule of European countries? Why? 2. What effect will nationalism have on the Germans and Italians, people in Europe with a common culture and identity who were being dominated by other European countries after the Congress of Vienna. Why? 3. What effect will nationalism have on large empires (like the Austrian Empire and Russian Empire) that controlled many different ethnic groups (like the Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Romanians, etc). Why?

Concluding Question Do you think the rise of nationalism will ultimately make Europe more stable or less stable? Why?
