Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Procedure The steps that follow describe the procedure for installing a pre-hung door.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 1 a.Check the rough opening to see that it is the correct size and is square and plumb.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 1 b.Most rough openings for doors should be 2" wider and from 2" to 2 1 / 2 " higher than the actual door.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 2 a.Measure the height of the top and bottom hinges on the pre-hung door. b.Transfer these measurements to the trimmer stud on the hinge side of the rough opening.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 3 a.Nail a set of shims where you made a mark for the bottom hinges. b.Adjust the shims to 1 / 2 " thickness.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 4 a.Using a long level or a level with a straightedge for accuracy, nail another set of shims at the position where you marked the top hinge.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 4 b.Make sure the top shims are perfectly plumb with the bottom shims. This will make handling the door easy and ensure that the door will be plumb in the opening.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 5 a.Place a shim on the floor to elevate the hinge side of the door slightly. b.Lift the door into position on top of the shim. c.Check to be sure that the jamb is plumb and flush with the finished wall.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 6 a.When it is in the correct position, nail the jamb to the trimmer stud through the shims. b.Do this next to the hinges.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 6 c.If there is a middle hinge, shim behind it as well. Be sure not to disturb the plumbed jamb.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 7 a.Set the head jamb parallel with the top of the door. Do this by raising or lowering the strike jamb side of the door. b.Use shims to keep the gap even across the top. c.Nail through the shims into the header.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 8 Using shims to keep the gaps around the door uniform, nail the strike side of the jamb to the trimmer stud.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 9 a.Nail the casing across the top of the door. Put one nail through the casing into the jamb and another through the casing into the header. b.Do this every 16".

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Installing a Pre-Hung Interior Door Step 9 c.Apply the casing down the side of the door.
